OS X Lion Thumb Drive tops Apple Store

18 August 2011 2,554 views 6 Comments

Never mind that you can buy OS X Lion on the Mac App Store for $29.99, the $40 more OS X Lion Thumb Drive is the number one item on the US, Taiwan, French, UK and German online Apple Stores. Yes, of course, Lion’s number one on the Mac App Store and has been since it launched.

That said, whether it’s an actual requirement (i.e. no broadband) or just a wooby (a.k.a. security blanket), many users still feel the need to have a physical copy of OS X. Although it’s easy and $40 cheaper to roll your own OS X Lion USB install drive, apparently quite a few people feel there’s an advantage to getting one from Apple.

Used Disk Utility to create a USB install Drive as well as a bootable DVD. The USB is definitely faster to boot – but the DVD may be handy!

Dude! It’s got an Apple logo on it! In 25 years this thing will be a rare collector’s item. I’ll be able to auction it off on eBay and finance my retirement.

Made my own thumb drive a couple of days after Lion came out, its a lot faster than downloading Lion from the App store and I’ve got a high speed internet connection ( 20 Megabits per second), used it to load Lion on my external 1TB hard drive and it worked great, much faster than a DVD disk.
