Redbox, Foursquare partner on discounted DVD rentals

12 August 2011 676 views No Comment

From August 15 through August 24, Redbox and Foursquare are teaming up for an unusual promotion, 10 days of Deals. Just check in and get a 10 cent to $1 discount code, must be used the same day, good on your next DVD rental.

For Redbox, the appeal of this pairing is obvious — help people discover their local Redbox locations, which are ubiquitous (image above), and rent DVDs. What’s in it for Foursquare (iTunes, free)? That’s an interesting question as the check in service is all about getting out and watching DVDs is a home activity.

Then again, perhaps we’re over thinking this as adding users, their activity data and then feeding them discounts is what this company lives for, and the stay at home crowd is probably under served.

Ready to rent?

For me, this is a no brainer as I’m already a Foursquare member and visit Redbox a couple times a month for DVDs. Will this increase my family’s movie consumption? Probably not, but in this economy every penny, dime and dollar counts…

What’s your take?
