How to: Enable AirDrop on any Lion Mac
The promise of Apple’s AirDrop, delivered with OS X 10.7, is simple — if you and your friends are running Lion, then you can share files, boom, just like that. The caveat, at least as far as Cupertino is concerned, is that you must have a newer Mac capable of personal area networking (PAN). Well, screw that.
If your Mac runs Lion and has wifi, then there’s a workaround.
Open OS X’ Terminal (Applications > Utilities) and then type or paste the following command:
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser BrowseAllInterfaces 1
Hit Return and then you’ll need to relaunch the Finder — right (option) click on the Finder icon in the dock and click Relaunch. A restart gets it done, too.
When the Finder comes back, pop open a window and AirDrop will (should) be available in the Finder sidebar. And, off you go.
