Is my iPhone, iPod touch, iPad iOS 5 compatible?

As we approach the launch of Apple’s next major mobile operating system update with the prospect of all those new features and cool new apps, people are going to wonder whether or not their current iPhone, iPod touch and/or iPad is compatible. The mothership has published a list, but it’s buried (unlinked) at the bottom of this page.
In a nutshell, the two most recent generations are to varying degrees compatible.
The full list, presented above as an image for the visual learners among you, reads like this: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 3rd generation, iPod touch 4th generation, iPad and Pad 2. Of course, Apple’s new idevices, with updated iPhone and iPod touch models expected to be announced on October 4, will be compatible, as well.
Are you ready to buy new or will your old iPhone just have to do?

“In a nutshell, the two most recent generations are to varying degrees compatible.”
So, please explain! For example, how compatible is the original iPad? In what ways is it not compatible? How about the 3GS? Same questions.

Do you know something that others don’t? I’ve seen little mention of a new IPT model anywhere else! Hope you do have the inside scoop!
