Growl 1.3 is Lion compatible

4 October 2011 1,752 views 4 Comments

It was free, easy and something of a pain to keep up to date. Now, Growl 1.3 is Lion ready and available on the Mac App Store for $1.99, but the easy “ultimate notification system” bits remain unchanged. However, the latest version leaves PowerPC users in the ditch.

At first when I saw that Growl isn’t free anymore, I was peeved. Then the impact of the $2 price tag settled in and I wasn’t so irritated.

However you feel about it, Growl 1.3 (App Store, $1.99) is now available. You can still create your own skins, personalize notifications, control it using Automator and AppleScript and, well, do everything you could before — there are scores of compatible apps.

Ready to revolt or are you completely copasetic with the cost?

    what the f%$+?
    Who will pay for this?
I guess Growl will quickly be replaced by another free alternative. It’s too bad when a good free app start charging users. I would rather have to see ads when I get a notification compared to pay for every new version release…
    it sucks… :(

asheen, I am as upset as you are. Nevertheless, once you buy the app from the app store all future updates are free according to the app store policy. $2 isn’t that much to pay, however, I think it is going to loose it’s popular stance since developers will not bundle it as much as they used to in the past and that is why I will not be paying for it. The developer should have offered the same old features for free and created more skins, more advanced features for the extra $1.99. Who knows what is going to happen but I see that the app is doing very well on the app store.

Growl has a huge ecosystem and scores of tie ins — paying $2 for this brilliant notification system is a no brainer.
