Pretty much every funky and/or just odd codec can be handled, smoothly and cleanly, by VLC which is a very good thing. Nevertheless, software is a journey, not a destination and here’s another point on that line.

The lovely laddettes, and lads, at VideoLAN.org have released VLC Player 1.1.12 (blog), which is a garden variety point update with fixes, tweaks and patches:

Upgrade to Adobe CS5.5 and Save!• Mac OS X / auhal: multiple fixes for the Digital Audio output (S/PDIF) including support for OS X Lion
• Fixed crashes with Japanese locale on OS X
• Minor fixes for AVI demuxer, smem and AudioScrobbler
• Fixed crash in HTTP and RTSP server (stream output or Web interface)
• Updated Breton, Simplified Chinese and Basque translations

When considering open source software, it pays to forget Richard “eats toe jam” Stallman. Yeah, the guy who’s glad Steve Jobs is gone.

That said, I have donated to VideoLAN before (and should again soon) because I’m a happy user of their quality software. Be a happy user, too, and download VLC Player 1.1.12 now.

iTunes, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store
