Camino 2.1 gains Gecko 1.9.2, offers improved plugin handling

Looking for an up-to-date browser for your older PPC or Intel Mac running OS X 10.4 or later? It’s tough to beat Camino, though this could be the last major update we’ll ever see. What’s new? Step inside for those details and a few words of hope, as well.

The world is a nicer place with this Firefox variant in it. Camino 2.1 (download) has been one year in the making and comes to market with the following fixes and features:

The New iPod touch from MacMall.com• Now uses version 1.9.2 of Mozilla’s Gecko rendering engine, which contains thousands of bug fixes, enhanced support for web standards, and improved JavaScript performance
• Enhanced location bar autocomplete
• Now disables insecure or incompatible versions of common plug-ins
— Flash is enabled by default, but blocked
— No longer includes Java Embedding Plugin (download)
• New Internet Plug-Ins folder in the profile allows for Camino-only plug-ins
• A new hidden preference allows disabling specific plug-ins
• New “Work Offline” and “Go Online” items in the “Camino” menu allow Camino to enter offline mode
• Status bar can now be hidden via the View menu

With Camino 2.1 now out, unless there’s a radical change in plans, we’re looking at the last major update of this long-time favorite Mac browser. However, Camino Planet notes that v2.1.1 is to be expected someday, though there seems to be some hope that Camino might continue beyond that.

“If you have any development experience and would like to contribute those skills and your time, please join us on our development discussion list to help us chart the future of Camino,” writes Smokey Ardisson.

Hmm, are you hopeful Camino can be saved?

I love Camino. It just seems to load faster and work faster than Firefox or Safari on my PPC and Intel Macs. Maybe they could ditch Gekko for WebKit as iCab has already done?
