Mozilla’s Surman: ‘I’d like to ask you to make a gift of just $10 or more’

Today, my inbox was graced by a year end missive from Mozilla. Seasons greetings? Not. Actually, they’re asking for money. Though the open source group will roughly treble their annual two-handed take as a result of their just renegotiated Google search deal, they want MOAR.

“As the year is almost over – and as part of our ongoing fundraising efforts – I’d like to ask you to make a gift of just $10 or more,” begs Mark Surman, executive director, Mozilla Foundation.

Never you mind the big helping of filthy lucre Google’s already agreed to ladle out.

Yes, Mozilla will get $300 million a year for the privilege of keeping Google as the default search engine in Firefox. Once again, that’s about three times as much as the open source foundation that inherited Netscape’s bones has gotten in recent years and here they are plaintively saying to me, “Please, sir, I’d like some more.”

Well, don’t ask, don’t get…

What’s your take?
