Generally speaking, when Apple launches a new product or service, they do a really good job of explaining and documenting what it is. For some reason, however, the mothership’s online service offerings regularly arrive ill defined and iTunes Match is a case in point.

That said, Apple has gotten part of its post iTools, dotMac, MobileMe and now iCloud with a music slant online service act together. So, what is iTunes Match? Here’s the company’s basic introduction, contained in Apple’s iCloud product description:

If you want the benefits of iTunes in the Cloud for music you haven’t purchased from iTunes, iTunes Match is the perfect solution. It’s built right into the iTunes app on your Mac or PC and the Music app on your iOS devices. And it lets you store your entire collection, including music you’ve imported from CDs or purchased somewhere other than iTunes. For just $24.99 a year.

That we knew, but there is new here to peruse in the form of a 10 item iTunes Match FAQ (scroll down a bit), which provides answers to questions like “Who can use iTunes Match?” (almost anyone with $24.99) and “Will iTunes Match songs download over 3G on my iOS device?” (yes).

Further, Apple’s offering the iTunes Store: How to subscribe to iTunes Match, which does what it says in step by step fashion.
