Skype 5.5 beta delivers tweaked UI, improved quality

If you see this update reported elsewhere, it’s likely you’ll get the impression that something major has happened to Skype’s interface. Not so. In fact, it’s somewhat difficult (image above shows an example) to find anything different — still, it’s progress of a sort.
Been having trouble finding the right place to click to “Add people to this conversation”? Well, Skype 5.5 beta (blog) has you covered as that command is now located in the drop down menu at the bottom of a conversation:
Today, we’re pleased to announce an update to Skype for Mac with the launch of Skype 5.5 for Mac Beta. This update includes improved Call UI, the ability to accept incoming calls with or without video and improvements in call quality and stabilization. The improved discoverability of Skype’s Call allows Mac users to easily mute their microphone, send video, share their screen, send files and even add more people during a call.
And, that pretty much covers it, though the user interface is still pretty darned opaque and, frankly, as ugly as it ever was, is and apparently will be for the foreseeable future.

How about the elimination of the silence from the caller’s end for several seconds after the phone has been answered by the party being called?
Huh. I actually like the UI. I do wish that they’d use let us skip the Facebook integration, though. Only 2 of my FB contacts use Skype, and the others aren’t the video calling type. Plus.. corporate environment allows Skype, but FB is usually blocked.. right there, we have a problem.
