Inferno: My Mac’s on fire

I am a big fan of screensavers — always looking for new (and old) stuff. That said, I recently stumbled on a website offering a collection of 14 Quartz screensavers, most of which display smoothly on my older Mac.

The Ethereal.org website hasn’t been updated since 2008, but the 14 Quartz screensavers listed are all still available and all work, though about half perform poorly.

That said, Inferno (download) plays well on my 2007 iMac and it’s pretty neat (image above). Orthogonal Transcendental is an example of one that performs poorly.

Quartz screensavers are back(ish)

Apple’s OS X Lion broke many things, including most though not all Quartz (.qtz) screensavers. One of the casualties was A Little Bit of Nothing’s popular SnowFall screensaver. However, I’ve downloaded and tested it under OS X 10.7.3 and it works again if poorly.

See also: Zugakousaku for a large collection, more than 30, Quartz screensavers, many of which perform well under OS X 10.7.3.

Previously, although I could install it, selecting SnowFall in System Preferences > Screensaver would cause OS X Lion to report that the screensaver wasn’t compatible and that it would be automatically disabled — that no longer happens.

Still, although SnowFall now plays, it did crash System Preferences — not every time, but occasionally — and performance is poor.

How are you making out with Quartz (.qtz) screensavers?
