What is Mountain Lion’s sign? Leo, of course

Apple’s latest Mac operating system opus, OS X Mountain Lion, is currently in beta and generating surprisingly little heat — last year at this time, the inter webs were chock full of Lion previews and feature descriptions.

However, one mystery about the new OS that has gotten some attention and now an answer is what image Apple chose for Mountain Lion’s default desktop.

For OS X Lion (10.7), we got an image of the M31 Galaxy, part of the Andromeda constellation. Those already enjoying the Mountain Lion beta can now sleep easier know that the default desktop image is the NGC 3190 Galaxy located in the Leo (a.k.a. the lion) Constellation.

This image was the Astronomy Picture of the Day for May 3, 2010.
