SMARTReporter 3: New UI; improved auto detection, reporting

If you’re riding herd on a roomful or whole building full of Macs, keeping track of your charge’s hard disk health is very much a good thing. SMARTReporter is one of the more popular ways of doing just that and it’s been completely remade with the release of version 3.0

Yes, you can certainly find free apps that do roughly the same thing, but you won’t find one that’s slicker or easier to use than SMARTReporter 3 (version history). Here’s a shortlist of the new features in this popular and, at five bucks, low-cost utility:

• Completely new version of SMARTReporter with major new features
• Completely overhauled user interface to be more capable and easier to use
• Now automatically detects and warns about configuration problems with the notifications
• Added support for hot-plugged disks, always check all connected disks
• Added a “Status” tab that shows a status summary of all 4 disk checks and notifications
• Added I/O-Error checking for external disks
• Added option to send an daily status report of all disk checks via email
• Added option to schedule regular short S.M.A.R.T. self-tests
• Added option to schedule regular S.M.A.R.T. parameter checks
• And a dozen-plus other new and/or improved features

SMARTReporter 3 is available on the Mac App Store ($4.99) and a less capable version, SmartReporter Lite 2.7.2, can be had for free — the source code is there, too, for those that enjoy monkeying around under the hood.
