The blue and white G3 was a beautiful design. The translucent case with the G3 imposed on the sides, the apple logo all shiny and blue, and if you look closely there is a horizontal line pattern in the darker blue plastics on the front of the case ... Seriously this desktop got more admiration on my desk than the first generation G4 that was released a few months later. I have used every G3, G4, and G5 powermac desktop model that came out during the powerpc days and Apple didn’t score a nicer desktop until the quicksilver G4’s came out a few years later. No one remembers the first G4, but they do remember the blue and white G3.

Ahhhh... my first Mac. It and the 17" monitor (unfeasibly dense and wide - like a cannon ball) cost me £3500 in instalments. Yup the mouse was a disaster and the candy keyboards initially cost £70 to replace, but
I liked the translucent Kevlar, and the squishy latch and nifty opening case. The handles however were agony to wield, as it weighed a ton. It was also (unofficially) upgradeable. Mine made it all the way to a 500 G4 and a 3DFX Voodoo only for them to can Half Life & Halo. It even ran OS X. We've come a long way.

Actually I thought the B&W G3s were very nice. They introduced color at a time in the marketplace when all desktops were bland beige. That helped them to stand out at the time and sell a ton of units. But you are right, that hockey puck mouse sucked!
