Boxer for Mac: Play [some] DOS games

29 May 2012 1,781 views 3 Comments

play your favorite pc-dos games of the '90s with boxer for mac. it's free.

Your misbegotten youth? Live it again by playing the PC-DOS games of yesteryear with Boxer for Mac. It sounds just that easy, but the only way to find if your favorite will play is load it and give it try.

Whereas my favorite game from the early ’90s is Army Alley (doesn’t play), you very well could find success and, barring that, Boxer comes pre-loaded with four titles — Commander Keen 4, Epic Pinball Demo, Underworld Demo, X-COM Demo — so the fun’s built-in.

Boxer 1.3 requires OS X 10.5 and up. Get your very own copy here.

    (I’m the developer of Boxer.)

I take it you mean Armor Alley (http://www.mobygames.com/game/armor-alley), released in 1991 by Three-Sixty Pacific? This game runs fine in Boxer, or at least the copy available for download from http://abandonia.com/ does; some DOS gaming sites have incomplete or just plain broken copies of some of their DOS games though, which won’t work properly in Boxer. About 90% of DOS games will run in Boxer without problems, though it is indeed a matter of “try it out and see!”

(I should note that a buggy version of Boxer 1.3 was initially released on Monday, which would freeze when launching new games for the first time. This was replaced soon after with a fixed version, but unfortunately quite a few people had already downloaded the buggy version, and this may have been the one you tested. Updating Boxer will fix the problem.)
