For Mac gamers, Marathon and its two sequels were the gateway drugs. However, the PC/DOS crowd generally looks back to Wolfenstein 3D as the original first person shooter and this year marks that title’s 20th anniversary. In celebration thereof, iD Software and its founder John Carmack have created of free browser version Wolfenstein 3D.

That said, it would appear that the free browser version of Wolfenstein 3D has been done without Adobe Flash, though that beauty could be only skin deep — in Safari, choose “View Source” from the View menu and have a look around for yourself.

If you’re unfamiliar with the history of early PC gaming or Wolfenstein, check out the John Carmack’s commentary (below).

Wolfenstein 3D and other iD titles are available on the iOS App Store

Update: Just tried this on my 2011 iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 and Safari 8.0.7 — awesome! Good to see this free-to-play web version of Wolfenstein 3D keeping up with the times!
