Real-time strategy — if you have that itch, chances are you are scratching with Sid Meir’s all-time king of the category, Civilization V and there’s an expansion pack (video walk through after the break) available that builds on the new and classic goodness in this much-loved title. There’s also a deal available — save one-third off the SRP — but it’s a limited time offer, so act quickly.

First things first. Civilization V: Gods & Kings ($29.99) ships today and comes to market with the following goodness back in:

New Stuff: 27 new units, 13 new buildings, 9 new wonders, and 9 new playable civilizations, including the Netherlands (William I, Prince of Orange), the Celts (Boudicca) and the Mayans (Pacal the Great).
• Religion: Not winning by force of arms? Pollute and manipulate their minds with a customizable, tweakable religion.
• Reworked Combat System: AI now places more emphasis on balanced army composition. Melee naval units have been added, as well.
• Enhanced Diplomacy with Espionage: In addition to being able to establish embassies with your rival civilizations, spies will now be an important part of how you conduct your foreign affairs, including surveillance, espionage, etc.
New City-States: With religion being added to the game, it only made sense to introduce Religious city-states which will interact with your religion in special ways.
• Three new scenarios: Experience the fall of Rome, explore the medieval era, and a unique scenario in a Victorian science-fiction setting.

Then there’s the deal — buy Civilization V: Gods & Kings via MacUpdate and get it at 33 percent off, net $19.99, today only. If you don’t own Civ, there’s a deal for that, too — MacUpdate Bundle for just $49.99, which includes Parallels, Civ 5 and either other great Mac apps at one great price.

Lastly, if you purchased Civilization V: Campaign Edition on the Mac App Store, Gods & Kings expansion pack is available as an in-app purchase — no discount, but awesome convenience.

Is this expansion still dependent on Steam?

I broke down and bought Civ V after Christmas, and was enormously disappointed in it. One thing that is most annoying is that Steam dependency. I installed Lion Server turned on the web server around February and now Steam won’t run, which means that I can’t run Civ V.

If Civ V is run under Windows using Parallels or Fusion that problem can probably be bypassed, as can the lack of an SDK, but the game then slows down.

Civ V was an enormous disappointment to me. I’m afraid that I regret spending my money on it. So will the expansion pack be any better?

It’s a great game beloved by many. You’re not among that number, so keep don’t spend the money. Besides, the expansion pack special price was one day only…

Your reply was rude, abusive, and non-responsive.

I’ve played the Civ games since 1999, and enjoyed most of them. (I would not say I love any game for philosophical reasons, because love is something only given to people, God, or possibly animals.)

Civ V is not a good game. The SDK is non-operative for the Mac, and on Windows requires the installation of additional software. Steam is there mainly for the DRM, and does little to enhance the game play. It becomes non-operative under certain conditions, including running a web server, such as Apache.

I have not seen a Mac version of the Gods and Kings expansion pack listed on Amazon.

Is the pack Windows only, or does it run on OS X in native mode?

Does it integrate with Civ V without requiring the use of Steam, or does it require Steam?

Those are the relevant questions, and some kind of information about that should have been included in your original article.

Never mind. It’s Windows & requires Steam.

Not worth the effort till they do a true Mac version.

Thomas, it’s in the mac app-store. No need for steam, just download and play on your mac.
