The requirement that parts be removable with common tools is probably there to increase the profits of recyclers, who can then send the machines to sub-industrial areas where illiterate workers can disassemble them with screwdrivers. These profiteers will then turn around and criticize Apple for the working conditions in its Chinese factories? Double hypocrisy.

Manufacturing methods change. Glue allows more reliable, more flexible, and thinner construction. We may as well require that automobiles be constructed of wood in factories powered by water or steam.

It is easy to use a common tool to remove the batteries from the case of the MacBook Pro Retina Display - just use a heat gun aimed at the outside of the case. This easily melts the glue and the battery is then easily removed. Duh.

1. EPEAT Criterion: Use common tools to disassemble the computer.
2. MACBOOK PRO RETINA DISPLAY: PASSES.

Everyone knows (or at least should know by now) that the glued batteries in the MacBooks are just as easily removed as the glued batteries in the iPhone and the iPad.

The batteries are removed easily using a heat gun aimed at the outside case.

It is common sense that Apple would NOT glue the batteries in a way that they could not remove them easily.

Whenever a customer would take their MacBook to Apple for replacement of the batteries, or if Apple refurbished and resold a MacBook with new batteries, Apple can replace those batteries quickly and easily.
