MobileMe officially went dark on July 1. To soften that blow and ease the transition, Apple gave MobileMe users a complimentary iCloud storage upgrade. That was supposed to go away on September 30, but it seems we have been given a generous reprieve.

Apple has published a fresh Knowledge Base article — iCloud: Extended complimentary storage for former MobileMe members — that’s sure to bring a smile to MobileMe users that upgraded to iCloud — keep your free complimentary storage upgrade, in my case 20 extra gigabytes, for another year for free.

Apple announced the move in the above email to former MobileMe customers shown below:

Dear Mr. Fergleshnark,

When you moved your MobileMe account to iCloud, we provided you with a complimentary storage upgrade beyond the standard 5GB that comes with an iCloud account to help you with the transition. Originally, this storage upgrade was set to expire on September 30, 2012.

As a thank you to our former MobileMe members, we will continue to provide you with this complimentary storage upgrade at no charge, for an additional year, until September 30, 2013. No action is required on your part. For complete details, please read this article (link above).

Thank you again for using iCloud,

iCloud Team

That said, I’m only using about 1GB of my 5GB (default iCloud allotment) + 20GB complimentary storage upgrade, so this move is more a straight bonus rather than a lifesaver. However, I’m sure some folks are breathing a sigh of relief.

Good on ya, Apple…

What’s your take?
