The last iteration of SimCity for Mac to ship was version 4 back in 2003, when PowerPC was still king. Although this category defining real-time strategy game has been available for the iPhone and iPad for years already, Mac gamers have been left out in the cold. That will change come February 2012.

At the end of September 2012, Call of Duty: Black Ops Mac shipped, receiving favorable reviews. The downside with that release is the fact that it arrived nearly two years after the PC version, not to mention the planned November release of Black Ops 2 for PC — ouch.

That said, when SimCity for Mac ships in February, it will arrive on the same day as the PC version — platform parity is a good thing™.

Another first for the fairer platform will be the launch of Electronic Arts game distribution, network play and community platform Origin on the same day.

Between now and February, Electronic Arts will offer beta of SimCity for Mac — sign up here. Or, if you have an iThing, check out SimCity Deluxe for iPhone ($0.99) or iPad ($6.99) — there’s a free version available for the iPhone, as well.

Excited that SimCity is finally coming back to the Mac?
