I’ve been crabbing about the demise of Skype — Skype for Mac: The slow march to oblivion, Skype for Mac: Version 6 brings a lot of Microsoft — and the decision has been made:

Our goal remains to deliver the best communications experience for everyone, everywhere. We want to focus our efforts on making things simpler for our users while continuously improving the overall experience. We will retire Messenger in all countries worldwide in the first quarter of 2013 with the exception of mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available — Skype Blog.

Skype began the process of folding Messenger features into Skype with the release v6.0.

Does this count as a strengthening of Skype or a dilution of the product? At the very least, Skype will continue as a partially independent product that is widely used if not well loved…
