Need to create tablet and smartphone apps, or publish an ebook? QuarkXPress might be the first solution that comes to mind, but Quark Software lists those very things as the top reasons to choose their app. And, now, a big change arrives baked into v9.5.

Beginning with version 9.5, App Studio is switching from the proprietary AVE format to the industry-standard HTML5 format — App Studio Goes Live for Digital Publishing with HTML5 (press release)

QuarkXPress is dropping a proprietary format. Just one, but the app and the company that makes don’t dominate like they once did.

QuarkXPress 9.5 is a free update for registered users — download it here.

Quark Software offers a 30-day free trial of QuarkXPress; it’s fully functional.
