This iteration of the Mac Apps report covers Skype and GIMP, as well as a FotoMagico (say it like Ricardo Montalban) update that brings new features…

Have you been wondering why Skype for Mac doesn’t offer gift credits? Well wonder no more, because this feature is now available to the rest of us — grandma needs to hear from you. This iteration of the Mac Apps report also includes GIMP and FotoMagico (say it like Ricardo Montalban) bumps, too.

• Skype for Mac 6.2 (blog, download)
eGifting: Skype user can now send a gift of credit to anyone they care about on their birthday
One-way SMS without verifying your mobile number
— There is also video call messaging, but no one’s quite sure what it’s good for.

The above screen grab from Skype really captures the excitement this update is generating.

• GIMP 2.8.4, download
— Move the OSX gimpdir to “~/Library/Application Support”
— Better names for the default filters in save and export
— Make tool drawing (esp. the brush outline) much more responsive
— Make sure plug-in windows appear on top on OSX
— Better default values in the Drop Shadow script
— Much, much more

Like the idea of GIMP — free and not Photoshop — but don’t wanna run X11? Fear not intrepid Mac user, because GIMP has been X11-free since 2.8.2. Yep, good stuff.

• FotoMagico 4.2 (Mac App Store, $79.99)
— Layers can now have a mask, which lets you create interesting special effects. Masks can be animated independently from the layer image, movie, or title. Download a couple of sample slideshows here.
— Layer opacity can now be changed, thus enabling many interesting transparency effects.
— Auto Save is now supported, thus freeing you from having to select the Save command repeatedly while authoring a slideshow. Auto Save may be disabled in the Preferences window.
— Saving is now much quicker than before. Average save times for large slideshows have been reduced from a minute to less than a second in most situations.
— More

Fotomagico, with rich Corinthian leather (I made that up), is a Boinx product (Mac App Store), which also makes iStopMotion, BoinxTV, PhotoPresenter and more very good stuff.
