MacBook Pro Firmware Update Fixes Battery Issues

Whether the issue is rare, as Apple says, or not, MacBook Pro owners suffering battery issues will be glad for this fix

Perhaps it is just me, but when Apple puts out a patch for a specific issue, the number of users affected is often said to be “tiny” or, as in the case at hand, the problem is described as “rare.” Regardless, MacBook Pro owners suffering battery issues will be glad for this fix.

MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7, download
— This update addresses a rare issue on some Apple notebooks where a battery that has accumulated more than 1000 charge cycles may unexpectedly shut down or stop functioning.
— For Early 2010 and Mid 2011 (15 and 17 inch) MacBook Pros.

That said, the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7 can be applied on units running OS X 10.6.8, OS X 10.7.5 and OS X 10.8.2 — i.e. up-to-date versions of Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion.

Which is more true to you — Apple lowballs the extent of this and similar issues or the company’s critics make mountains of molehills?

Do the math. If I bought an “early 2010″ when it first came out, and discharged and recharged the battery COMPLETELY, EVERY DAY between then and now, I would just about be passing 1,000 charge cycles. That is, assuming I hadn’t replaced the battery long ago for being worn out an refusing to hold a charge. I think I can safely say that this is indeed a molehill.
