One-in-Four Netflix Subscribers Are Cable Cutters

Cable cutters are a large and growing audience, right? Perhaps not, but almost everyone agrees that IP-based, on-demand TV is the future. Bolstering that notion is a new study of Netflix subscribers and a move by Nielsen to start counting online viewers.

Home Media Magazine has published the results of a small study (1,200 respondents) of Netflix subscribers and found that one-in-four are cable cutters. Whereas Netflix has 33 million subs, it is perhaps doubtable that more than 8 million of them are cable cutters.

A beautiful thought, nonetheless.

That said, TV metric firm Nielsen has said it will soon, perhaps by September, start counting online TV content viewing, which is a good thing.

“Consumers are accessing content in new ways that fall outside of our traditional definitions and if we don’t expand … we could be missing an emerging trend,” said Brian Fuhrer, a senior vice president, Nielsen.

And, that pretty much answers the question of whether or not cable cutting is a significant trend…
