In the Windows Phone vs iPhone war for dominance, Microsoft is winning in places like

Apple’s smartphone rules America and is doing pretty well almost everywhere else. For Microsoft fans, however, “almost” is the operative word. In the Windows Phone vs iPhone war for dominance because they are winning in places like the “rest of central and eastern Europe” and, yeah, Argentina.

Microsoft’s Windows 8 rollout is going… well, it’s going. Whereas the company is selling tens of millions of desktop licenses (upgrades, not so much), Windows 8 mobile just isn’t happening.

Unless, of course, you’re willing take a longer, harder look at the sales data.

Aijaz Rahi of Associated Press fame did just that and found some places where Windows Phone is winning: Argentina, India, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Ukraine, and the “rest of central and eastern Europe.”

Yes, Russia and India are big markets. Although neither is a global tastemaker, having device unit volume and app market bases to build from are crucially important.

So, congratulations, Microsoft. If “winning” means living to fight another day, victory is indeed yours…
