Here are five new or updated OS X screensavers — SaveHollywood, ScreenSleeves, Amnesty, Fresh Comics, MsgTheWorld — to help you keep things fresh

Mac getting a little stale, but lack the funds for a makeover let alone a new one? Here are five new and updated OS X screensavers — SaveHollywood, ScreenSleeves, Amnesty, Fresh Comics, MsgTheWorld — to help you keep things fresh. There’s also a new version of an app, ScreenTime for Flash, you can use to create your own Mac screensavers.

Enthusiastic knitter and coder, Shiela Dixon, has created ScreenSleeves 1.0 (download), a screensaver that displays the currently playing track with album art from either iTunes or Spotify. A nice touch is the ability control the track and volume without leaving the screensaver, including pause, next/previous track and volume/mute keys — it’s donationware.

Whitebox’s SaveHollywood 2.0 (freeware, download) has just shipped and its designed to play on Macs running OS X 10.8 and up. This screensaver displays movies, clips, videos (i.e. captured on your iThing) and even trailers from the iTunes Movie Trailers site — pretty nifty.

OS X Screensavers: New End, New Beginnings

Do you remember Amnesty, the third-party Dashboard clone? Well, according to Mac OS X Hints it’s gone open-source and is freely available from the (former) developer, MesaDynamics (a.k.a. Danny Espinoza).

In a similar vein, he’s also open sourced his Amnesty Screen Saver (download), which displays individual Dashboard Widgets on a black background as screensaver — some widgets work (i.e. Apple’s Weather Widget) and some don’t (i.e. Weatherbug).

Audacious Software has released Fresh Comics 1.1 (free, download), but hasn’t said what’s new in this version — nevertheless, works great on my 2007 iMac running Mountain Lion.

CNet notes the arrival of MsgTheWorld for Mac 1.0 (freeware, download), which delivers a stream of inspirational quotations from famous people in English, French or Spanish. However, MsgTheWorld for Mac repeatedly crashed the Screensaver Pane in System Preferences — your mileage may vary.

On a more serious note, as in expensive, individuals or developers looking to create their own screensavers from Flash (swf) media should have a look at Screentime for Flash 5.0 ($249, free trial).
