How To: Use Facebook Chat in Messages

If you use multiple IM services (i.e. Jabber, Google, Yahoo, etc), putting them all in a single app can be very useful — setup Messages to do Facebook Chat.

Facebook Chat is insanely easy to use — if you’re logged in, it’s available. However, if you use other IM services (i.e. Messages, Google Talk, Yahoo, etc), consolidating them in a single window can be very helpful — here’s how to setup Messages to do Facebook Chat.

As Facebook Chat runs on Jabber, which is one of the protocols Apple supports, you can set up Messages to function as a Facebook Chat client.

First off, make sure you are logged into Facebook. You will need your Facebook username, which you can find in Account Settings.

Now, fire up Messages, open Preferences (Command + comma) and then…

— Click the Account tab

— Click the “+” button to add a new account

— Select Jabber from the drop down Account Type list

— In the Account Name field, type or paste your Facebook user name (dude@chat.facebook.com)

— In the Passsword field, type in your Facebook password

— And, then click Done

After a few moments, Messages will link up with Facebook Chat via Jabber, your status will update to Available.

If you have problems, check out Apple’s Mac Basics: Messages for help with setting up an account or troubleshooting connection issues.
