Roku Adds PBS, PBS Kids

PBS on Roku, cool. Public Broadcasting System programming has previously been available in various ways, including Amazon Prime Video and the Plex plugin, on this popular set top box. However, this is nonetheless a big step forward — top level access to a larger and fresher collection of the signature shows, news and documentaries that thinking Americans have come to love.

Roku and PBS.org have jointly announced that PBS and PBS Kids programming, roughly the same selection available via the public broadcaster’s iOS apps, is now officially available on the Roku box.

Primetime: American Experience, FRONTLINE, Masterpiece, Nature, NOVA, PBS NewsHour, etc
Arts and music: American Masters, Austin City Limits, Great Performances, and more
• Programs from your local PBS station
• Original series from PBS Digital Studios, including OffBook and Idea Channel

The good thing here is that you can now watch the PBS programs your local station doesn’t carry on the Roku. Additionally, though local programming is part of the feature list, it’s apparently available at the PBS affliate discretion.

PBS on Roku is a small step forward that’s also kind of a big deal…
