Apple Updates: Apple TV 5.3, iAd Producer 4.0.1

Steve Jobs’ hobby — Apple TV is the world’s best-selling set top box — has just added HBO Go, ESPN, Sky News and other content sources, making it rich but not yet abundant. Meanwhile, Apple’s long mobile advertising slog continues with feature and
functional enhancements to iAd Producer.

• Apple TV 5.3 (How to update)
— Brings support for HBO GO, ESPN, Sky News, Qello, and Crunchyroll
— Improves the reliability of signing into the iTunes Store and playing purchased content
— For 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs

• iAd Producer 4.0.1 (Registration required) — This update contains a number of enhancements and fixes, including:
— The ability to choose between SD and HD iTunes Store content with the — Store object and Purchase action
— Support for renting movies from the iTunes Store with the Store object and Purchase action
— Improved responsiveness when panning and swiping the Panorama object
— Performance improvements for exported iBooks Author widgets, iTunes LPs, and iTunes Extras
— Other fixes and improvements

For what it’s worth, with this release, the Apple TV offers about 20 top-level content choices. Yes, some are redundant, but the depth offered is pretty impressive and Apple TV’s iThing integration is excellent.

That said, it would be more than great if Apple used Roku’s more open approach to content availability — there are scores if not hundreds of channel choices on the Roku…

What’s your take?
