With the release of iOS 7, Apple will give users a choice of male and female Siri voices. That said, OS X Mavericks has new voices, Ava and Allison, too…

The sound of Siri’s voice is instantly recognizable. However, with the release of iOS 7, Apple will give users a choice of male and female voices that are new. That said, there are new voices in OS X Mavericks, as well, and one of them sounds very familiar.

As of Mavericks Preview 2, there are two new female voices available — Ava and Allison. Those familiar with OS X’s Samantha (a.k.a. Siri) are sure to recognize Ava, which seems to be a next generation version of the most recognizable computer voice since Hal 9000.

Although the above recording lacks quality, it is nonetheless obvious that Ava and Allison are smoother, more natural and, in a word, fluent than previous OS X voices. Both are available for download via System Preferences in OS X Mavericks beta.

[u] Apple pushed additional updated voices with an OS X Mavericks beta release — Tom, Samantha, Oskar, Moira, Karen, Fiona and Alva.
