Cord Cutters: IPTV Subs Rise as Cable, Satellite Fall

After years of denial by cable and satellite TV providers, there is now no doubt traditional pay TV is on the decline. And, here’s a look at the other side that coin — cord cutters and the rise in IPTV (internet protocol TV) subs.

“More and more Americans are ditching cable and satellite TV in favor of Pay-TV delivered via internet protocol,” writes Statista’s Felix Richter. “On aggregate, Pay-TV providers lost 352,000 subscribers between April and June, as the cord-cutting trend continues.”

Whereas cable is losing the most subscribers, the cord cutter revolt isn’t yet a force of nature. “Only” 588,000 cable subs walked away while more than 55 million remain — change is coming more slowly than some had hoped — and there are about 100 million pay TV subs.

Nevertheless, as the economy and housing continue to rebound, pay TV’s go to excuses for falling subscribers, the writing is on the wall. Yes, IPTV subs rise and fall each quarter, but the overall trend is decidedly up — more than 11 percent of total market are IPTV subs.

The assumption is that IPTV subs are overwhelmingly cord cutters.

Are you a cord cutter? Thinking about it?
