2013 iMac Teardown Posted, EFI Update 2.1 Fixes Black Screen Issue
Apple pleasantly surprised the rest of us yesterday with the introduction and immediate availability, three models anyway, of new Haswell-powered 2013 iMacs. And, just a day later, iFixIt has already disemboweled a 2013 iMac while mothership has released an EFI update, which is unsurprising.
Also unsurprising? Spoiler Alert — iFixIt found an open SSD slot, but also gave the 2013 iMac model (21-inch) a low repairability score.
• iMac (late 2013) EFI Update 2.1 (download)
— This update is recommended for iMac (late 2013) models. This update addresses an issue which may cause a black screen to appear when installing Windows 7 or Windows 8 using Boot Camp Assistant if both an external optical drive and USB thumb drive are connected to the system. This update also ensures that the system will boot by default into OS X after installation of Windows 8.
— Requires OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.4 (12E4022) or later
Whether it takes a day, a week or a little longer, EFI (aka firmware) for new Mac models is pretty much standard operating procedure. Once upon a time, firmware updates were unusual and tricky to apply.
These days, not so much — common, though not frequent, and so easy grandma and junior can do it…
What’s your take?
