Spruce up your old Mac with this tasty and fresh batch of free Mac screensavers — updated eye candy from a who's who of Mac screensaver developers

No money for a new Mac or even more RAM? Spruce up your old Mac with this fresh n’ tasty batch of free Mac screensavers — updated eye candy from a who’s who of Mac screensaver developers.

First up is an OS X port of Terence M. Welsh’s OpenGL screensaver for Windows. Solar Winds is a cool Mac screensaver that is excellent in every way — Retina ready, GateKeeper compatible — but one.

Solar Winds isn’t OS X 10.9 compatible, which is perhaps unsurprising given that it’s an OpenGL screensaver and Apple has transitioned from OpenGL 3.2 to OpenGL 4.1 in Mavericks.

Mac screensaver maestro Seiryu has updated Hills, Hyperspace and Microcosm for OS X 10.6 or later. And, good news, all three are OS X Mavericks compatible, though Hills can be a little glitchy (doesn’t crash on my 2007 iMac).

Oriol Ferrer Mesià has updated his Anèmona, a particle-based screensaver based on LiquidMac, for OS X 10.8 and later.

Stéphane Sudre’s Flocks is now OS X 10.6 ready, but doesn’t run on OS X Mavericks. For what it’s worth, he catalogs a large number of Mac screensavers, more than a dozen, which he says in the comments section below are all (save one) Mavericks compatible — your mileage could vary.

Of the above Mac screensavers, Hyperspace is easily my favorite — rich, smooth and trippy graphics…

What’s your take?
