Netflix + BitTorrent: A Match Made in Holland

16 September 2013 1,612 views No Comment

Or, heaven — some folks think that Holland and heaven are actually the same place. What’s all that? When Netflix was deciding what content to offer in Holland, the streaming video giant checked out torrent sites to see which movies and TV shows were most popular. Netflix + BitTorrent, brilliant!

“With the purchase of series, we look at what does well on piracy sites,” Netflix Vice President of Content Acquisition Kelly Merryman told Dutch tech news site Tweakers. “Prison Break is exceptionally popular on piracy sites.”

Hence, Netflix offered Prison Break on day one when Netflix launched recently in Holland.

“Certainly there’s some torrenting that goes on, and that’s true around the world, but some of that just creates the demand,” added Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.

To whit, Netflix has claimed that it’s well-stocked, low-cost streaming media service is crowding out (illegal) torrenting.

How long have people be illegally downloading movies and TV shows, 10 years? 15 years? The industry is finally getting their arms around the concept of providing value consumers are willing to pay for…

Brilliant! How are you getting the most out streamed content?
