Low-Cost Roku 2700x Revealed in FCC Filing

The Roku 3, which shipped in March, has been received very well both critically and in the marketplace. The Roku 3, however, isn’t a standalone device, but a template for other new set top boxes, including the upcoming low-cost Roku 2700x.

Engadget spotted an FCC Filing that informs us that the Roku 2700x exists (image above), but provides few details:

The Roku 3 might not be the only Roku set-top box arriving this year: an unannounced 2700X has just passed through the FCC for approval. The filing shows a streaming hub that’s curvy like the Roku 3, but is limited to single-band, 2.4GHz 802.11n WiFi.

Given that the FCC secrecy order expires in less than 90 days, the Roku 2700x launch is expected sometime before Christmas.

In related news, Roku is developing a new protocol called Discovery And Launch Protocol (DIAL), which will allow Roku to offer even more third-party streaming content via apps — no timeline has been given.
