Do you NEED to run antivirus software on your Mac? No, but reasonable observers still conclude that running Mac antivirus is a good idea and ClamXav is the free, open-source-based solution that runs on my Macs.

Developer Mark Allen has been baking 64-bit into ClamXav for some time and the job is now complete. Additionally, ClamXav 2.6.1 (download) also brings limited Notification support.

v2.6 features, tweaks, fixes:
— ClamAV engine updated 0.98 *
— ClamAV engine now 32/64 bit
— ClamXav and Sentry now 32/64 bit
— ClamXav (not Sentry yet) uses Notification Centre on 10.8+
— Implemented select-all/copy for Exclude and Sentry preference panels
— Added timestamp to logs of scheduled scans
— Fixed issue where ClamXav always reported “defs updated”
— Fixed issue where ClamXav would warn about a quarantine folder unnecessarily
— Fixed positioning of OK/Cancel buttons in Preferences (French)
— Updated Italian localisation
— Change folder name for Czech localisation so it works again on OS X 10.8+
— Removed plugin (and instructions) from Disk Image as not required for 10.6+
— Minimum requirements now OS X 10.6+ and an Intel processor

v2.6.1 changes
— Fix for 32 bit machines running OS X 10.6

The requirement for OS X 10.6 or later is a major change. Of course, legacy Intel and PowerPC versions of ClamXav are still available.

ClamXav is available on the Mac App Store (free).
