Adrian Stutz and an international cast of supporting collaborators have released MPlayer OSX Extended, which is being called the future of MPlayer OSX.But when I see the future, I close my eyes. I can see it now…* Adrian Stutz and an international cast of supporting collaborators have released MPlayer OS X Extended, which is being called the future of MPlayer OSX.

• MPlayer OS X Extended (download)
— Up-to-date builds of MPlayer and FFmpeg
— Clean and concise interface and preferences
— Support for MKV files with embedded fonts and ASS subtitles
— Multithreaded and 64bit-enabled for best playback performance
— Built-in support for a wide range of video and audio formats
— Fullscreen controls, playlist, inspector and interactive audio and video equalizers
— Capture screenshots of any video
— Automatic updates for itself and MPlayer binaries
— The App is now code-signed for Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
— Application size down 38 percent by dropping PPC support, removing unnecessary libraries and only needing one MPlayer binary now that FFmpeg-MT has been merged
— Many, many fixes
— See the full release notes

Unsurprisingly, the future is OS X Mavericks and legacy PowerPC Macs have been left behind. Of course, older versions of MPlayer and VLC Player continue to function.
