Yes, a skilled user can extract individual install packages from .dmg disk images, as well as .zip, .tar. tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .pax, and .xar archives (and more). But, a savvy user knows how to get the job done faster and easier, Pacifist.

• Pacifist 3.2.3 (download)
— Enabled full-screen mode on OS X 10.7 or later
— File viewer windows can now be closed via the space bar
— Fixed a bug that caused the splash screen to draw incorrectly on Macs w/ Intel Iris graphics
— Fixed a crashing bug that could occur when trying to load an invalid .bom file
— Pacifist should hopefully not cause the discrete GPU to be switched on anymore in MacBook Pros with dual GPUs

Pacifist requires a Mac running OS X 10.6.8 (or higher) on a 64-bit Intel processor. However, you can download older versions, compatible with PPC Macs, of Pacifist here.
