Many had expected Apple to start taking pre-orders on Thursday of last week — 30 days ahead of the anticipated launch date. However, that didn’t happen and we perhaps have a reason why.

Apple has gotten ’round to announcing the winner of their just concluded 10 billionth iTunes Music Store download contest, which awarded the lucky individual who purchased the fateful song with a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card.

A US correspondent for a UK publication claims that Apple’s no longer charging for the iPhone OS 3.1 firmware upgrade for the iPod touch, which a quick check of the Apple iPod touch page would seem to indicate isn’t true.

It’s beginning to look like Christmas in February, for Apple at least. Though the rumored start date falls on an unApple-esque Thursday, it certainly makes sense that the company would want to start measuring demand ahead of the actual release.

Just because you’ve gone to sea doesn’t mean you have leave the Apple Store behind. A new ship being constructed in Germany will have a dedicated Mac and iPod retail presence dedicated to highlighting the advantages of the fairer platform.

This is the latest endemic problem identified by Apple to affect the company’s popular entry-level portables. The other issue being the now infamous “crackbook” issue, which is also covered by a repair extension.
