Regarding OpenCL compatibility in Handbrake Mac > tonymacx86 said it was: http://www.tonymacx86.com/graphics/93480-list-popular-opencl-apps.html

Which is something we repeated here: http://fairerplatform.com/2013/04/opencl-mac/

That's been rectified.

That Apple does and doesn't support Intel QSV and that OpenCL has languished -- that's all pretty irritating. They really need to raise their game.

Handbrake is the messenger, not the irritant. Love the app. Use it regularly. Will continue to encourage others to, as well.

"The irritating news is that Handbrake.fr has also released separate betas implementing OpenCL 1.2 and Intel’s Quick Sync Video, both are Windows only."

The OpenCL branch compiles fine under OS X, but hasn't been tested at all on that platform, so releasing it would've been a bad idea.

"However, Handbrake for Mac is OpenCL compatible, just not the latest and greatest version."

Not sure what you mean by that - the Mac OS X builds of HandBrake do not use OpenCL at all.

"Sources of this irritation? Apple added Intel QSV support in OS X Mountain Lion"

Not via Intel's MediaSDK, no. So we can't use it. If that changes, we'll provide QSV-enabled builds of HandBrake for OS X, too.

Your shut down fix seems to confuse doing a hard reboot and a restart. You describe doing a hard reboot, i.e., hold down the home button and the sleep/wake buttons simultaneously, but then should say to continue holding them down until the iOS device powers off, keep holding them, and back on and until you see the Apple. Then you can let go. Otherwise, you could have merely held in the sleep/wake button until the slider "turn off" indicator appears at which time you slide it off. This powers it down. Then you restart it with the sleep/wake button by holding it in until you see something come up on the screen. The first way is a hard reboot, which is a good troubleshooting tool and resets a bunch of problems. The second is merely a turning off then back on of the device, which fixes some, but fewer problems. I'm really not sure what you described does, but I think is the same as merely turning off and on again. You don't get the benefits of the reset unless you continue to hold down the two buttons through powering off and until you see the Apple again. At least that is my understanding and I don't mean to be critical so please let me know, if I am wrong. Always learning...

I'm a professional programmer and webdev and I use GIMP and Inkscape for all my design and layout work. It is a shock to the system to convert away from Photoshop - which I did back in 2005. But I don't regret it. Sure some nice PS features are missing from these OSS app's but I've found work arounds. And after all this time I actually prefer the free tools.

I certainly prefer not handing over big bucks every couple of years. For me it was worth it to bone up on free editors so that I can just do my work without having to ask bosses for licenses or pay for my own.

As a student, I'm not thrilled about the rental requirement and glad I bought a CS 5 education version of Design Premium--I'll be using that for the next few years. What I find interesting is that Photoshop Elements hasn't been mentioned much as the "replacement" for Photoshop. It has most of the tools, functionality & familiarity of it's bigger sibling; there's a pay hack to unlock additional ones, and Photoshop Elements is only about $100.00(USD). Granted, there are other options and I like Pixelmater(very similar to Elements in look & functionality), I think it's great for the occasional user(not used it enough to have run into it's limitations) and I love the price. I may be using it and more/other/similar and less expensive software--including iDraw for my illustration work, but Adobe is the "standard" the industry has adopted and by which all others are compared. I'm also looking into alternatives for InDesign--I have iWork 09 for Pages(I need tabs for multiple open documents, layers and type on a path) and looking at Swift Publisher. Mostly very happy that as a Mac user I have several lower priced options, even if it means I may have to cobble together 2-3 image editors, 2 page layout apps, etc... to have the functionality of 1 Adobe app.

Off to try out some more software demos! Best of luck to all of us!

Probably I should give Pixelmator a try. After Adobe went the subscription route I figured I'd best buy a 'real' upgrade to PS CS6 from CS5 figuring I'd push off a decision whether to either knuckle under and pay forever or abandon PS until such time as CS6 is no longer viable. So I paid my $200 and downloaded the installer and burned my backup DVDs and only then did I find that they'd shipped me a Spanish version. Huh? Tried to get this corrected - called sales - they transferred me to India where after a longish delay I was told that a different serial number could not be issued and to call Adobe, return my purchase and try buying the right one again. Apparently language is related to serial number - the installer must be universal. Nice going, Adobe. I had a tough time with them over activating an earlier upgrade version; they're a regular bundle of laughs. Maybe I should just chuck PS now and go with something else which is apt to be quite a wrench after being on PS since version 2.5, sometime in the last century.

Although it worked for some time, my wifi malfunctioned again. Man, I read a little and it seems Apple is dropping support for old computers (like early 2008 macbooks). This is really a shame... I'm getting to this conclusion based on a lot of info I found on the Internet, but I could hightlight this: http://wotnau.blogspot.com.br/2012/01/os-x-lion-on-older-early-2008-black-13.html and this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3171415?start=0&tstart=0

I'll try installing Ubuntu 12.04 on my old macbook and see if the wifi continues faulty.

Thanx!

This keeping legacy OS versions available seems to be increasingly necessary. I suppose it happened back in the 80's tho I don't recall it. Probably we just didn't have the luxury of spare Macs or hard drives. I still feel annoyed that an app as popular as AW that must have countless billions of documents should be just abandoned. Imagine if all documents, books, records before 2000 were suddenly rendered unavailable.....

Mind you, if the Internet went belly up, which could happen in these uncertain times, most of the output of the 21st century will evaporate !!

Much of the information here is good, but there are a few inaccuracies that have material bearing on your conclusions, mostly having to do with 5GHz vs. 2.4GHz.
First of all, you're comparing the wrong protocols if you're comparing 802.11g with 802.11a. The real comparison in today's environment should be with 802.11n, which provides significant data throughput improvement on both 2.4 and 5GHz bands.
Second, you didn't address a major concern with 2.4GHz radios - that there are only 3 channels in the US that don't overlap (and thus produce interference with) one another. Before you say, "So what? I only have one or two APs," recognize that your neighbors may be all over the place with their channel assignments... and that extra range you tout as being so important becomes your enemy, not only in apartments, but even in residential neighborhoods, as their APs cause interference; the network names have zero to do with that, or with ANY interference, for that matter. By comparison, none of the 8 (or more, depending on where you live) 5GHz channels overlap. And for this reason, if you use more than one 2.4GHz AP, never EVER choose "Automatic" channel selection! Manually select 1, 6, or 11 - the only channels that don't overlap one another. (And use the same network name so your mobile devices will automatically roam between them.
Also, I don't know where your "observers" heard that dual-band APs outperform straight 5GHz APs. More devices may connect to them, but there is simply no possible way a dual-band system can push data any faster than a 5GHz AP can - unless you're only using the 5GHz band with both antennas and running 802.11n to have them discriminate, and even then that the difference would only show up in comparison to the cheapest home 802.11a APs, not 802.11n APs.
