Last week, the interwebs went wild when Wired reported that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak (aka Woz) said that Apple should make an Android phone. Turns out, however, the occasional Apple gadfly didn’t actually say that — all hail the god of pageviews!
When veteran tech journalist Gina Smith read the words, something didn’t seem right. And, Smith should know because she knows the guy really well and actually wrote Woz’s biography.
So, rather than simply wonder, she called him up and asked him.
It sounded wrong. So I called Steve Wozniak, with whom I penned his biography iWoz: How I Invented the Personal Computer and Had Fun Doing It. Steve emphatically told me that the press had the story “wrong.”
“They got it quite wrong for their own reasons… I’m used to things like this, (where the media turns) ‘could’ into ‘should.’ But the idea caught a lot of attention. It was just (my) independent idea … I’m sure others have said it before but I get more attention…”
So, yes, sometimes Woz says off-the-wall things. And, sometimes, like this time, people twist Woz’s words for their own purposes.
All hail the god of pageview…
