Fairer Platform reader “Peter” wrote to say that he can’t find a driver for his Samsung SCX 4521F multifunction printer. While his problem actually has multiple parts (ie scan, fax, print, networking), there is a fairly reliable solution for the missing Yosemite printer driver issue — Common Unix Printing System or CUPS.
As noted in the lede, Fairer Platform Peter wrote to say, “I cannot find drivers so that my Samsung SCX 4521F will work with Yosemite.”
As I don’t have a Samsung SCX 4521F printer to test against, I can say that Samsung does offer printer drivers for OS X 10.4 through OS X 10.9, which might work just fine for most users
That, obviously, doesn’t help our friend Peter.
So, I suggested he give the Common Unix Printing System, or CUPS, which is an open source project that delivers Mac printer drivers for a huge number of unsupported and/or ancient printer models. Sometimes these drivers match the hardware well and deliver a wide range of features — fundamentally, there are thousands of printer models based on a relative handful hardware configurations.
So, looking for and not finding Yosemite printer drivers? Give CUPS a try…
