VersionTracker is dead

8 September 2010 3,445 views 8 Comments

Back in 2007, CNet acquired MacFixIt and VersionTracker. Whereas, the former transitioned into the News.com paradigm rather quickly — it did retain a smidgeon of its original mojo — VersionTracker lingered on in its original form until yesterday with updates dwindling of late. Now, this long-time staple of the fairer platform has completely lost its identity, getting folded directly into CNet’s blandly generic Download.com site.

So, now you can get all of your PC, Linux and Mac downloads and software in one place — think of the convenience! Oh well, MacUpdate has been my go to new software reference for some years already and the erasure of the VersionTracker identity only serves to underscore the rightness of that decision…

What’s your take?

Sad. VersionTracker was one of the original Mac only sites. It was the place to be to find the latest and greatest software.

    Now it is dead.

Its functionality had been dwindling to the point MacUpdate surpassed it.

Gone are the good old days.

The “new” version tracker totally sucks ass. Totally, unequivocally, sucks ass.

    MacUpdate, we have a date.

I agree. Mac users need a new Version Tracker. Time for another upstart. :)

It’s too bad Versiontracker died. I don’t think much of CNET in general as all aspects have gotten worse over the years. Guess all my updates will be from MacUpdate from now on.

As an exclusive Mac user, I look to Mac/Apple stuff exclusively, not some hybrid thing like VersionTracker has become.

Next thing you know, MacSurfer.com will be sold off and turned into to ComputerSurfer.com. I am stopping any updates to VersionTracker.com and would to ComputerServer.com too.

Version tracker id dead and cnet is simply a windoze site trying to be everything . I visited it today for the first time in its renewed layout and my decision is simply it is not worth to come back again.

It is the ugliest, blandest unuseful site ever

Things is (for me) VersionTracker was a pretty good source of
programs and using CNET is like your computer suddenly becomes
a Windows PC….really, really bad interface and incredibly poor
system of searching and evaluating files and programs.

I hope the people at VT got a wheelbarrow full of money because
otherwise it was a wasted move and disappointed a lot of folks.
    Thank God for MacUpdate…

(BTW CNET reminds me of Meg Whitman and Google spending
money to see how much of their big ass they can put up on the
    media/Internet)
