Earlier this week Apple seeded OS X El Capitan Beta 7 to devs with Mac Dashboard turned off by default. Yes, you can turn it back, but it’s fairly certain that the Mac Dashboard probably isn’t long for this world.
How can I be sure? Brushed Aluminum… The above image wasn’t grabbed via Google’s Way Back Machine website, that’s the current artwork featured on the Apple Dashboard Widgets download page.
I will be surprised if the Mac Dashboard is included in OS X 10.11.
Regardless, for the time being at least, OS X El Capitan users can keep using the Mac Dashboard by turning it back on. Go to System Preferences > Mission Control and choose either As Space or As Overlay. I prefer the latter as it allows me to see whatever I was working before I invoked the Dashboard, which is especially handy when using the calculator.
That said, where once upon a time there were scores Dashboard Widget developers, today OneMac.net is one of the last still releasing new and updated widgets — lots of good stuff there!
Perhaps my all-time favorite OneMac.net widget is WidgetTV, which provides free and easy access to the live CNN, BBC, Sky, Bloomberg TV, etc feeds. For example, if you have a second monitor, you can watch the news fullscreen on display two while continuing to work on your main monitor…
What are your favorite Mac Dashboard Widgets?
